Jazz
in Schools began in 1988 as a project to provide
free jazz concerts for young people in schools
during the month of February, Black History Month.
The program helps fill the educational vacuum
left when schools made drastic cutbacks in the
arts.
The
Bill Green Mentorship Program is designed to provide opportunities to selected public school music students to receive training in advanced music techniques from professional musicians.
Jazzgiving
was born as the result of a fire that destroyed
the music department of Washington Preparatory
High School. The Society took the lead in a project
that restored the program at the school and replaced
most of the marching band instruments. The project
continues on, benefiting other music programs
in the Los Angeles School District.
Jazz CoolCats Is an after-school ten-week series of jazz education classes for elementary school children.
The
Annual Jazz Tribute and Awards Concert was
established in 1983 to honor Los Angeles-based
jazz artists for their contributions to jazz.
Vibe Summit, Produced in association with Mal Sands, has become a meeting ground for vibraphone players and fans since 1995. This event occurs every year around Summer.
